Cyst formation: Adenomatoid nodule - fibrotic stroma and glands ( adenoma). When adenomatoid nodule exists for a while and compresses blood vessels and surrounding tissue, hemorrhages and necrosis possible, and finally, in this place tissue degeneration with cyst formation. Example, leiomyomas of uterus sometimes reveal cystic degeration.

There should also be some lab tests done to measure thyroid hormones. All of that information will be used in making the best decision for you.

Unlikely but ask doc: Most of the the thyroid nodules are benign, cystic nodules are even more benign, but sometimes a small focus of cancer could be inside the cyst, to be sure most of the time after fine needle aspiration (fna) will be done by your doctor  send for biopsy ( cytology ) to be sure it is benign..

Recommend biopsy: Although there are characteristic finding on us that help up get an idea of what type of nodule it is. The gold standard for diagnosis is a us guided needle biopsy. It is relatively non invasive and has good accuracy.

FNA not essential : As the nodule is less than 1 cm . FNA biopsy is not essential in most cases. But if any risk factors like history of radiation to head or neck or family history of thyroid cancer then need to follow up more closely by ultrasound and may also consider FNA biopsy

i have right thyroid lobe cystic lesion (0.28 cm on the upper pole) and 2 left thyroid lobe complex nodules ( 0.42 cm (upper pole) and 0.61 cm (lower pole ). is this a concern?

: Thyroid nodules or cysts are common. I wonder what the reason you had thyroid US done. The work up will depend on your TSH level and the nodule characteristics by ultrasound. Most of the time needle biopsy (fine needle aspiration FNA) is not considered for thyroid nodule less than 10 mm unless the nodule has characteristic features of a malignant nodule.

2 thyroid cystic nodules 1.6 cm and 1 cm in size on one side causing problems while eating. recommend hemithyroidectomy? what are the risks?

Accepted Answer

Very few: and they will be explained in detail by your thyroid surgeon. You can easily live on thyroid replacement (which may be the choice of your physician (to "avoid" development of  further nodules in the other half of the gland)
