Virus : Usually a virus. Your ENT will be able to quickly tell if it's something you should worry about (usually it's not) by doing a larnyngeal exam. He may even perfo flexible laryngoscopy.

Most likely: Stay home and rest. Drink soothing warm liquids and avoid straining your vocal cords by talking.

Allergy testing: In allergic rhinitis, it would not be unusual to only have mild mucosal thickening on ct scan.  That's good news... You don't have sinusitis or some other process going on!

if 3-4 weeks of regular nasal steroid spray doesn't help, (must be used as prescribe to work) then you may want to see an allergist for formal allergy testing.

Supportive care: Laryngitis is usually a viral infection, and is contagious.  Push fluids, gargle with warm salt water, and use lozenges.  Get plenty of rest.  There is no treatment other than supportive care.  

Don't share drinking glasses, and avoid close contact with others.  It will decrease the chances of others catching it.

Virus: You probably had a virus or an infection not sensitive to amox.  Now you may have a secondary bacterial infection. The so called "double-worsening.".

Dry cough: in an elderly taking antihypertensive medications: first-off, it might be due to the antihypertensive drug itself if it is from some group like ACE inhibitors. Second, you need to see a doctor for several reasons for dry cough, local or systemic, best wishes

The first thing is: To be sure of the diagnosis . Second is what is the cause ? Third is what is the precipitating and relieving factor . After full evaluation by your doctor , you will definitely get some help. 
If it viral , it is self limited . If it is due to acid reflux , medicines like Omeprazole help etc.

Hydration: One must know the cause of the laryngitis.  The term literally means inflammation of the mucosa or lining of the vocal folds.  The problem can be the result of overuse or misuse of the voice, true viral infection (bacterial infection very seldom).  There is no gargle for this because you would gag and aspirate it into your trachea. Drinking 4 to 6 full glasses of water a day may help. See ENT doc.

i get laryngitis about twice a year. is that abnormal? i work in a profession where i need my voice. how do you cure this?

One at a time: 1) depends on how much you use, or overuse, your voice.
2) if you need your voice you must do everything necessary to protect it.    Please don't smoke, get plenty of rest, and see an ENT surgeon as needed - you don't necessarily need surgery but you probably need an evaluation including a scope to take a look at your vocal cords.

i've had acute bronchitis & laryngitis since about saturday and have been off work since.  is it ok to go back tomorrow without infecting the office?

Depends: Are you on antibiotics and are you fever-free?  If you haven't sen a doctor, you should if you did see someone, you should call but generally if you have been on medication that long you shouldn't be contagious though bronchitis can really make you feel bad so it depends on how physically demanding your job is as well.
