Diverticulitis: Most people develop colon diverticuli (outpouchings of the wall of the bowel) as they age.  When these become inflamed it is called diverticulitis and can produce pain, diarrhea, sometimes blood in the stools.

Yes: Generally the symptoms of diverticulitis are left lower abdominal pain, fever, and bloating...It can also be associated with either diarrhea or constipation. If you have fever or abdominal pain, you should be evaluated as soon as possible, as diverticulitis is due to perforation of the colon, and can lead to serious complications if left untreated.

Not really, but...: Acute diverticulitis is associated with swelling of the colon that may create a temporary partial blockage of the colon. Therefore, we often advocate no food or just liquids during the initial phase of treatment. When food is resumed, it is common to recommend a low-residue diet early on.  After the inflammation resolves, we often recommend high-fiber diets, which may reduce the risk of recurrence.
