after having acupuncture for a shoulder problem my left inner shin keeps getting really hot, any ideas why?

May not be anything: I doubt there is a connection, however, if you had a needle placed in the shin that is bothering you, there may be some nerve irritation in that area. Look and see if there is any redness, swelling of the area in question that may give you a clue for a potential skin infection. Try a cold compress to begin with.

Short or long term?: It is common within 48 hours of treatment to have temporary symptoms like this in other parts of the body, then they go away. If its been longer than that, see if there is a needle bruise there. That could take a week or do to go away.

Common problem: It sounds like you may have the proverbial "pinched nerve" in your cervical spine.  Could be due to degenerative disc disease or a few other conditions. I would first suggest that you consult with an osteopathic physician {D.O.). He/she will examine you &amp;  will order imaging studies. The D.O. will then decide if osteopathic TX will help or give you a referral to an orthopedic surgeon.

Depends: A correct diagnosis is neccessary
then the correct treatment is advised
in rare instances acupuncture may releive pain.

Accepted Answer

Doubtful: shin splints are essentially a form of compartment syndrome developing with active use of muscles of anterior compartment of lower leg. More of a structural issue exacerbated by inflammation that will not be reversed with accupuncture.

does anyone know if acupuncture is a good idea for treatment of rsd/crps ? i would really  like to come off these  meds.

You could try: You could try it. I am not aware of any good studies on acupuncture for rsd/crps but i cannot think of any harm from it although if you have a limb that is swollen, i would not advise putting acupuncture needles in that limb because of potential risk for infection. Check with your doctor first before trying other treatments like acupuncture.

Discuss this: The acupuncturists I've met are all the sort of people who'd be very willing to discuss all of this with you and to refer you if necessary. That's the best 1st step unless you feel bad enough to consider an ER visit. Best wishes!

my toes swell in humidity and never go down. the only things that help are cortisone shots and acupuncture. no rheumatic conditions - any other ideas?

Circulation/arthriti: Could be a circulatory condition. It can still be a form of a an arthritity as well. See physician for examination and testing to find out and get treatment.
