Yes!: An acl tear makes the knee unable to resist rotational movements that occur when you plan your knee and twist to the opposite side. However, walking and straight-forward running is not usually affected. Older literature describes deficiencies in walking, but that literature is outdated. Acl reconstructions are done to restore rotational and translational stability, not to restore walking.

how long does acl tear rehab usually take?

Depends: Following an ACL reconstruction post tear, the rehab usually involves three months of regular physical therapy, then some follow up as needed.  Our physical therapist then will do a three month sports/functional test to see whether you can be discharged from pt or if you need to continue.  Overall, it take a whole year for the graft to mature, so some pt may be needed off and on during that year.

Possibly: A partial tear of the acl is a challenging diagnosis. There are really different types of partial acl tears, but most surgeons don't really know when to reconstruct. More important is whether you are having symptoms of shifting in the knee that causes swelling afterwards. That is a reflection of instability that allows damage to the knee. Couple that with you level of activity for the answer!

The acl is a major knee stabalizer, and can provide security to your knee that may prevent further damage to nearby tendons, ligaments, muscles, articular cartilage, meniscus, & bones when compared to a "loose knee"

8-9 months: Although the time before your surgeon let's you return to sports varies, any pivoting sports place great forces through the reconstruction. A autograft acl (your own tendon) typically takes 6-7 months to mature while an allograft acl (donor tendon) typically takes 8-9 months to mature. The higher your performance level, the more important it is to wait for the acl to heal and mature. 8-9 months!

Effusion (swelling): An acl tear can often include an mcl tear that occurs at the same time. An acl tear generally causes bleeding in the knee joint caused by tearing the blood vessels around the acl. This causes a very fast swelling of the knee joint (usually without the hour). An isolated mcl tear usually does not swell inside the knee and causes pain on the inner portion of the knee, where the mcl tore.

Sometime not much: It sometimes can be difficult to distiguish the two from symptoms patients experience alone.  That is why a good physical exam is key to making the diagnosis.
