Must be healed 1st: My general rule of thumb is to make sure there is an end to inflammation.  The inflammation causes damage in itself.  Once things have subsided a strengthening, stretching program can be instituted.  If the inflammation of the tendon is not treated, the injury can become worse and even end up in a rupture.   Diagnostics such as MRI are pretty significant in achilles tendon injuries, .

Definately can be: Rest, ice, compression and elevation of the foot is a good idea. You may even want to consider a walking boot if the pain or swelling is moderate.

Hard to say...: Would need to examine.  With the splits you typically stretch the adductor muscles in the thighs and not directly the achilles...But if you have a slight injury/pull/strain, you may be compensating and it could be affecting your achilles and your ankle joint.

Yes: Have you consulted your provider. You could have developed arthritc changes and sometimes you could have developed calcium deposits or they have not healed well. Please consult your provider.

See a podiatrist: There could be a partial tear in the tendon or associated structures.  I love our nurses, but you should see a doctor on this one.

Yes: More likely you ruptured the Plantaris tendon which  is a "violin string" like vestigial tendon running UNDER the Achilles In any case Ice Elevation first 48 hours then Heat and elevation. If there is bruising this will confirm this online Diagnosis

i had a sprained achilles' tendon 6 years ago in high school and it sometimes flares up and swells making it uncomfortable  to walk what can i do?

Achilles tendonitis: RICE, rest ice compression elevation, but with it being 6 years ago likely a chronic injury, will be difficult to get better.  Try some Physical therapy for 6 to 8 weeks with the RICE and if not better get MRI may have a partial tear.  Go to ER if pain or acute weakness  gets suddenly worse.

what disease or condition could explain pain in the ankle and achilles' tendon without an injury or sprain?

Medications: Some medications such as Levaquin (levofloxacin) will create achilles tendonitis.
You should have it checked.
