dentist confirmed today tooth abscess under crown needing root canal. i have a slightly enlarged bean size firm posterior cervical lymph node on that side of my neck. could node be enlarged because of the abscess? i have been worried about the cause?

: Good diagnosis. Lymph notes can trap bacteria and other stuff coming from abscess which turns on lots of things in the lymph node trying to fight the infection.  Show to dentist and ask as well.

: Those nodes work on serum that travel from the mouth and surrounding tissues. I believe your dentist has it right. If you are worried about cancer that is not the node I would first expect it to involve.

NSAIDS: Easily available & otc. Ibuprofen will be my drug of choice. But not to complicate things further and improve the chances of being able to save the tooh & crown see a dentist asap, dental abscesses are notorious for causing life threatening space infections n cavernous sinus thrombosis in many cases.

Abscess = Infection: Is the problem a periodontal issue? Does the tooth have root canal therapy that is failing? Does it need root canal therapy? Is the tooth fractured? Once the cause is determined, then the proper treatment can be implemented.

i got an old root canal retreated this past tues due to abscess. dr put meds and temp crown on it til appt in 2 wks.  abscess seems worse. normal?

Endo retreatment: Whenever a n old root canal is retreated, it is normal for the tooth to be more sensitive than before. The removal of the root canal filling is more laborious that taking out the pulp tissues. It is always possible to take the files outside of the root into the surrounding bone and cause some post op pain. Continue the medication as prescribed and check back with the dentist if symptoms worsen.

Symptoms: Pain - usually a dull ache that feels 'deeper' that the tooth. Although its worth mentioning many abscesses are painless.
Swelling- usually localized to the aree of the gums around the roots of the affected tooth.
Drainage - a 'pimple' or bump that might produce pus, or not at all.
Pain to touch or biting.

i had a root canal 4 years ago & didnt get it crowned (no $). today found out tooth had an abscess. was this due to not having crown?

Possibly: So hard to say without visualizing the tooth, knowing the current condition of the tooth, and having a current as well as a final fill radiograph. Many things can happen in four years, especially if the tooth was not restored as recommended. Hopefully the tooth can be saved. All the best...

Pain source: Pain can come from many sources even after your root canal. The tooth may be a fraction too high in your bite subsequently bruising your tooth socket, the tooth may have had a fracture to start, food may be getting caught around the tooth, some residual bacteria may be caught down deep around the root, etc. A visit with your dentist may lead to some answers or a night guard. Best to you.

Some thoughts: Are you taking antibiotics for the infection? Any pain meds? Most of these problems can be attributed to the meds, not the procedure or the temporary crown. Speak to your treating dentist and let them know what is happening.

Abscess: An abscess is an infection as soon as possible.  The timing of the appropriate steps in your care must be determined by your treatment team, the people who know you best.  Timing and sequencing of treatment is not possible in this forum.  Please put this question to the people who are treating you.
