Healing....recovery: You r really speaking of 2 different periods. 'healing' would be the time post op when the wound is closed, their is infection, redness, crust, satin looks like darker normal skin--month or so. Recovery is the period after major surgery that takes months to a year: rehabilitation, pt, love and support needed  to achieve optimal function-the really hard work that takes enormous inner strength.

Regular post op pain: Most patients have normal post op pain requiring narcotics for 5-7 days. Patients with ischemic pain or infection pain, are really much better as surgical pain is much easier to treat than ischemic pain. It may be good for u to talk to someone else who has undergone similar procedure so u know what to expect. Ur surgeon should b able to arrange this for u.

Yes: If it heals normally the sutures or staples are removed in 3/4 weeks. A shrinker to reduce swelling is then used and measurements for the prosthesis are taken. A temporary (for 1 year) prosthesis is fitted at 6 weeks approximately - then the patient walks on 2 legs again. A final prosthesis is fitted at 1 year approx. When all the swelling is gone and the leg has reached a stable shape.

Narcotic pain meds: Would be used initially.  Outside if pain control, any medications would be for a patient's specific problem(s), not really for the amputation. Because of this, the only medication that would be nearly universal is pain medication and possibly heparin/lovenox for blood clot prevention.
