i am taking 50mg vyvanse for anxiety/adult adhd. 5 mg abilify (aripiprazole) was added to control panic attacks. how do they work together /possible side effects?

Can Be OK Together: There are no real concerns about using these two medicines together. However, Abilify (aripiprazole) can sometimes cause drowsiness, which could affect your focus/concentration. Also, keep in mind that Vyvanse can sometimes cause increased anxiety. If you are needing additional treatment for anxiety/panic, you would want to talk with your provider about whether Vyvanse is adding to the anxiety.

Monitor Carefully: Stimulants like Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) can be very helpful in patients with mood disorders and ADHD, but they can also be highly variable in their effect--in other words, time will tell for you, and you alone, how effective this will be. If possible try and include as many people as you can in your "circle of trust" to help monitor your progress.

Just so that you adjust your expectation it may take many months and sometime if may take several years to find just the right medications and dosages combined with psychotherapy to get treatment optimized with Bipolar Disorder.  This will usually be done in a stepwise progression led by symptom improvement &amp; side effects.

Sometimes a med helps but causes side effects at higher dose & adding a second med may achieve desired response with less adverse effect at lower doses of each medicine.

Usually: Many patients who need add medications like vyvanse also need an ssri like Lexapro (escitalopram) or zoloft. If they are prescribed then there is not a problem. If they are not prescribed for you then the answer is no. Do not take someone else's medication or try combinations on your own.

Nothing good.: The combination of alcohol and Abilify (aripiprazole) will increase your chances of side effects from abilify (aripiprazole). The severity of the side effects is also increased. Need to relax? Try a massage. It's healthier than alcohol and you can drive after engaging in it!
