my 5 year old just had very green mucus on/in her stool.  complains often of stomach aches.  what should i be worried about?

Mucous is unusual: Regardless of the color, mucous in stool can be a sign of infection or inflammation in the intestines.  If the stools are loose or watery, this is even more likely.  I would recommend that she see her doctor and that a stool test be done to check for a bacterial/parasitic infection or malabsorption of fats and proteins.  Tests can take 3-5 days to obtain results.

Many things: Denise, your symptoms could be several things from infection with virus or bacteria, food poisoning, inflammatory bowel disease, parasitic infection...the list is extensive. Depends...: A lot of things, ranging from a minor viral syndrome to a more serious gastrointestinal disorder (colitis).  Mucousy stools could be colitis, or inflammation of the colon.  Is blood present in the stools?   Bacterial colitis may require antibiotics.   Call your pediatrician.

gastroenteritis: Your symptoms could represent a vial gastroenteritis. Stay on a bland diet, nothing greasy or fried. Refrain from milk andmilk products as well as juice. You should feel better in 5-7 days.

Likley colitis: you may have a simple infectious colitis.  if you have more abdominal pain or nause or vomitting, then you may need antibiotics. otherwise plenty of fluids and symptomatic treatment is enough. 
if you notice blood in stools , then you will need a medical evaluation for crohns colitis/ IBD

Pain and diarrhea: There are quite a few causes of abdominal pain; while most are not serious or get better on their own, there are some conditions that need treatment to prevent worsening. If you have watery stools they should be tested. Your doctor can evaluate you for the cause of your pain to determine if it is more serious.

Fast transit: Green stool is usually a sign of fast transit through your bowels.  It is normally caused by bile that has not had time to fully "digest" after which it will change color.  Blood and pain are a more serious problem and could be anything from hemeroids to cancer.  You should see a doctor for an evaluation.

GI evaluation: If her doctor has done a thorough evaluation and ruled out other causes of the belly pain (reproductive organs, liver, gallbladder, etc), the next step could include having an evaluation from a gastroenterologist.  They'd consider further testing and possibly a colonoscopy.  They'd likely also discuss trying an elimination diet.  Best of luck!

Red mucus: Various reasons for red mucus. Likely some degree of irritation of your distal colon, however, could be even from red food coloring or colored undigested food. If no symptoms, resolution probable. However, if no improvement in a few days check with your provider.
