Thumb sucking: Thumb sucking can cause dermatitis that itches as well it can cause infection (bacterial, fungal, viral including herpes)
need to see your physician to determine what's causing the bumps.

i had been sucking my thumb for 16 years. i already have braces (and stopped thumbsucking). will it be able to correct my teeth problem??

Yes braces work.: Once you stop sucking your thumb your teeth will stop getting worse.  The braces will gently pull them back to proper alignment.  It is important to see the Orthodontist regularly to have the braces adjusted.  This will insure you get the result you want.

A normal x-ray: doesn't always mean "all fine",  just that there's no apparent bone fracture or joint dislocation.  The fingers are very complicated structures with small muscles, tendons and ligaments.  If these are swollen, injured or out of alignment, they can cause pain, swelling, popping, clicking &amp; other issues.  I suggest that you take her to her pediatrician for follow up.  Dr. Anne.

hi, i have recently observed  a straight vertical black line on the thumb nail of my 9 year old daughter. googling it has spoilt my peace of mind. there are no other issues or injuries. could you please let me know what that black line on the nail is?

Need eval to know: Black stripes down 1 nail may be subungual hematoma.  Red or brown streaks may be splinter hemorrhages. Brown/black lines from nail plate to tip are often seen in people with dark skin &amp; are normal. Subungual Melanoma can cause nail ridges &amp; dark colors of cuticle. It most often effects the thumbs or big toes. Dark lines may be due to other illnesses. Get checked out when in doubt.

Thumb sucking: It is normal and i would not worry unless it goes beyond two years. Children can change the shape of their palate with thumb sucking. Don't stress it and consult your pediatrician or pediatric dentist.

Bedtime: I try to narrow the thumb sucking to nap or bedtime. I tell the child it is okay to suck the thumb in bed. By focusing on one time per day, the child feels there is still hope of not getting in trouble for the habit. Eventually, the nighttime habit will lessen too. Medicines, bandages and yelling do not seem to work well.

Adult thumb sucking: It is not homosexual. If it happens while he is asleep then there is nothing he can do about it. It probably reflects some of the same needs as you find in childhood thumb-sucking -- a way to calm yourself or feel emotionally more secure. If it has not been enough to make his teeth stick out, it is probably not harmful. I would just tell him without judging that you observed this & ask if he knew.

Some : Some thumb habits are more harmfull than others. It depends on frequency, duration and force.  Your 4 year old does not have any permanent teeth yet, but his habit can narrow his palate which will result in a malocclusion of both his baby teeth and his permanent teeth.
