Take her back to her: doctor. If she still has stool in her colon, finish the clean-out. Then give daily Miralax (polyethylene glycol) at a dose that yields soft stools for at least 6 months &amp; have her sit on the toilet for 15 minutes, 15 minutes after dinner nightly with her feet on a stool, like a Little Looster, blowing bubbles to help push. 5-year-old child says belly hurts badly when she pushes on it, at & below belly button. she is not constipated. what could it be? what signs 2 look 4?

Accepted Answer

Several things...: Has she had any contacts with illness? Any recent travel? Loose stools? Bloody Stools? Any contact with animals, pets, in particular reptiles? Past history of constipation? Any fever?   Is pain intermittent? or is it persistent and worsening? Can she walk? or is she lying very still?  These are the first questions we will ask when evaluating her.

my 5 year old son does not poop every day, but when he does, it is quite large &he cries.  is he constipated?  how much miralax should  i give?

Accepted Answer

Constipation: Increasing water intake and increasing fiber intake are good ideas.  You can give 1/2 of the dose of Miralax, but why not try something a little more child friendly?  There are fiber gummies, or my personal favorite, Bush's baked beans.  Half cup a day.

Agree: With going to er. Yes it could be constipation but there are other problems more serious that need to be ruled out . Generally intense abdominal pain that is unrelenting and lasts for more than 1-2 hours with no relief needs to be evaluated.

Back pain: Localized back pain. Is it on spine? Bones need to be investigated further. Otherwise, constipation can cause these symptoms too.

Diet: Constipation like that is almost invariably dietary and you should look at "balanced on the whole" it might just be the part of the diet that does notmeet the term "balanced" that is the invisible cause!

Not related: Hives and constipation exist independent of one another.  Constipation isusually either too much constipating food, not enough fiber, or not enough water. Fiber supplements help, as does cutting down on dairy and drinking more water.  Hives are an allergic problem.  First treat with benadryl, (diphenhydramine) then find and remove the cause of the hives.  If all this fails, see your pediatrician.

can gummy vitamins cause constipation? the only real change in 3.5 yr old's diet in last 2 months  & he used to be reg. has gas but hard/painful stool

Stop it: The logical approach is to stop the gummy vitamin for a week or two to see if this is the cause for the constipation. Do note that most people (except pregnant women) , do not need a multivitamin. In fact, it may do more harm than good.

Constipation: This sound unusually intractable - I would consult a peds GI specialist because there are underlying disease that can cause chronic constipation such as Hirschbrungs Disease.

my 5 yr old has had 36 hrs of extreme stomach pain. his fever is between 99-101.5 and he vomited once last night. could it be constipation?

Extreme stomach pain: Call your doctor immediately.  Could be serious e.g. Appendicitis get help now.
