can 5-htp (100mg) be used safely with 7.g per day of buspirone?  just came off of 20 mg citalopram 2 weeks ago.

Drug interaction: I hope you are asking about 7 mg of buspirone, not 7 grams.  Buspirone usually is dispensed as 7.5 mg to 30 mg/ day.   5-HTP is usually a safe dose to be taken daily, however the interaction between 5 HTP and buspirone can cause nausea.  Ask the prescriber of the buspirone whether they think you should be taking these two meds together.

"natural": Unfortunately natural does not necessarily equal safe or effective. Herbals are not subjected to evaluation to make sure that they contain the ingredients that they advertise. In this case i would suggest celexa. Or its generic  alternative- citalopram.

i just recently stopped taking 40mg of celexa. how long do i need to wait before starting 5-htp?

Wait a week or so: Taking these medications together increases the risk of a serious side effect "serotonin syndrome".  Since the half-life of Celexa is about 35 hours, waiting for a week or so will insure that it is out of your system before you take 5-HTP.  Check with your doctor to be sure, and let him or her know all the medications and supplements you are taking.

for five years i've maintained a 100 lb. weight loss.  they recently changed my psyhc. meds and i'm ballooning.  is it the celexa (citalopram) or the trazadone?

More likely Celexa (citalopram): Both trazadone ; Celexa (citalopram) can cause weight gain in some people; both are also known to cause weight loss. However, it appears that more people gain weight on celexa- many websites say studies have shown an average weight gain of 15-20 pounds on Celexa (citalopram) (though I have not seen the actual studies). Consider alternatives including 5-htp ; same.  Michael schachter is an excellent holistic md in suffern.

A pound in a week: You should go slower like taking 500 calories less each day whch make 3500 calories in a week and this is equal to a pound.

Citalopram  : there is no interaction to take these 2 meds when you stop the med it does not stay for too long in your system but if you are taking it for any sleep related issues it's better to consult with your doctor

Short-term use only: Benzodiazepines are indicated for the short-term use (2–4 weeks only). The use of benzodiazepines, including lorazepam, may lead to physical and psychological dependence, so do not take higher doses of the medication or use it for a longer time than your doctor recommends.

Tapering Prozac (fluoxetine).: Please do not stop your antidepressant without checking with the prescribing physician. Stopping Celexa (citalopram) after 5 days is unlikely to result in withdrawal symptoms..
