PT steroid injection: Physical therapy can be very helpful, consultation with an orthopedic surgeon would be helpful.  Most resolve on their own within a period of weeks.  Steroids injections can be done as well.  Most treatments start off as conservative.  Ibuprofen can help with pain and inflammation.

Need Reevaluation: .. All the way to .. Is important. Have you told your surgeon? Was there immediate relief that didn't last? Have you seen a pain specialist-concerns are continued nerve root involvement, sympathetically mediated pain and even myofascial pain if the pain is not all the way down your leg. There are meds which can help tremendously with this kind of pain like snri's and anti-epileptic drugs.

Try non-surgical 1st: Most lumbar disc problems respond well to conservative (non-surgical) approaches. Surgery should be a last resort only when other approaches have failed- while often helpful, surgery does not always work & can have serious complications. Ask: Ask for an opinion from a reputable neurosurgeon or ortho that does back surgery. Most bulges are treated medically unless there is nerve damage that might become permanent . With time the disk will dehydrate and diminish in size with decrease of symptoms without surgery.

Pain : Pain is a complex sensation that reflects both physical and mental states.  The most easy to understand pain is pain that comes from a known cause, for example a broken leg.  It is often much harder to understand pain that does not appear to have an obvious source.  Getting further away from the broken leg, examples include the aches and pains we feel with bad jet lag, the aches and pains of flu, the pain of migraine (which no one seems to doubt), and the pain of fibromyalgia (which a lot of people question).  Pain that doesn't appear to have a source may be caused by an imbalance in the regulation of pain pathways in the spinal cord and in the brain, and is often linked to mood disorders like anxiety and depression.  Often, this kind of pain can't be eliminated, but can be made more bearable by an approach that draws from many sources, including:  self help (which includes improvements to general health -- like quitting smoking, diet and exercise), psychotherapy, manual therapy, and (when needed) medications.
