Head trauma: This is not a common cause of a true concussion, but if this episode has been followed by headaches or dizziness, some type of head trauma probably occurred. I would think more of a neck strain when your head jerked. Consult your physician if symptoms persist  or worsen.

Concussion: The acute effects of a concussion may last for several days, including headach, nausea and disorientation.  Sleep may be affected.  
The front of his head may have taken a good part of the blow, causing a bruise of the skin, subgaleal hematoma, both outside the head.  I would try Ibuprofen or tylenol (acetaminophen). For the headaches and see your physician if symptoms persist.
