Electrolyte problem: Diabetes insipidus occurs due to either abnormality in hormone secretion from the brain or kidney not responding to this hormone.  High blood sodium  levels is one of the common and serious electrolyte problem. Being two year old, the child may not be able to express the thirst or get access to water when the sodium level is high. It is crucial for the parents to carefully monitor them.

Totally normal: Assuming the shaking is brief, it's totally normal. Usually myoclonic jerking in the muscles. If it's really more of a shaking and it's prolonged, more than just a few seconds, then discuss it with his pediatrician. Very unlikely to be diabetes though unless he's having drinking and urination issues, or failure to thrive.

my son seems to be having a lot of very wet diapers all of a sudden.  could this be a sign of diabetes?  he is 2 years old and hasn't lost any weight.

Drink more,pee more: When i hear hoof beats, i think of horses not zebras.More wetting does mean more fluid is passing through, but 2yo's often develop a drinking fetish, especially if it's sweet(juices are junk). The diabetic 2yo can quickly drop a pound a day & eats constantly at the same time.If u are concerned, let your dr do a urine test. If no sugar in the pee and the urine is dilute, gradually reduce the fluids.

Anytime : Anytime a child who can sit, stand, walk and talk stops being able to do these things, they need to be seen emergently.  These could be signs of a serious problem with the brain such as bleeding, infection, stroke or tumor.  You should call your child's doctor if she has one yet in california.  If she does not, then she need to go to the emergency department.

It varies: Autism is an incredibly complex problem that manifests itself in many ways.  If you are looking for a simple answer like you would get for a simpler disease (eg: chicken pox causes fever and rash), then you will be frustrated.   There are books on this subject....Big ones.   If you are concerned that your child is autistic, you need to see your pediatrician or a  pediatric neurologist.

Can be: The average toddler is expected to get 5-7 respiratory illnesses/yr to age 5 and 1-3 diarrhea illnesses in the same time frame. To space it every other month would be pretty common. Some kids run fever with their illnesses as a sigh of a robust immune system, some seem to have the same illness & never show many symptoms. In a kid that's growing & developing well & don't worry about that pattern.

Viral diarrhea: Vast majority of diarrhea episodes in children are due to intestinal viral infections which are self limited.  Meaning, it should go away on its own.  The danger is always dehydration from the  diarrhea.  Helpful at home treatments: first small amounts of water or mild electrolyte solutions like pedialyte frequently, avoid gatorage and other adult sports drinks.  Second, acidophilus rich yogurt.

It happens: Kids often get mild viral illnesses that are followed by a non-specific skin rash. The rash represents the virus combined with antibody going to its final resting place on the skin surface. They build their immunity this way. There are dozens of named &amp; in-named viral illnesses with this pattern. It happens more when young because they develop immunity as they age.

The : The best ways to treat a cough are:

-drink plenty of fluids 
-keep a glass of water by his bed at night 
-use a humidifier if the air is dry 
-eat a spoonful of honey, or drink apple juice, or chicken broth to help with any "coughing jags" 
-research shows that these methods are as effective as over the counter cough medicines.

If he experiences any respiratory distress, he needs immediate medical attention. The signs of respiratory distress are: 
-rapid breathing (more than 60 times a minute) 
-grunting or gasping with breathing 
-flaring of the nostrils 
-working hard and using extra muscles to breathe such as sucking in at the neck or under the rib cage 
-blue or dusky coloring 
-change in speech or level of alertness

reasons to call his doctor are:
- fever
- unable/refusal to drink
- concern for dehydration
- a cough that isn't improving after a week.
