Get help: You don't say if your son has any underlying conditions such as autism, but allowing a 16 year old to hit you is teaching him to be abusive. If he does have another condition, get specialized help (behavioral training). If not, get help for yourself, for him, and for the family. Domestic violence is dangerous for everyone involved.

Anger management: Knowing what triggers his tantrum will help. Ignoring them too might help . Giving time out for about 3-4 min help him to cool down too.

Parenting : Parenting is the hardest job we will ever do.  It sounds like you are working very hard at this and trying to do the right thing.  Some children are "wired" differently than others, even in the same family.  There are many professionals who can offer expert advice.  I would urge you to see your pediatrician and discuss your concerns, and ask for counseling referral.  It is not counseling for you, but for recommendations that they can often make to inforce your child's correct behaviors and to reduce the concerning behaviors.  The ages of 2-3 are especially trying as the child is "testing" their limits.  It is good that you are seeking out ways to parent that will be beneficial to your child.

Yes: Emotional dyscontrol is very common in cases  of damage to frontal lobes or other portions of the emotional circuitry known as the limbic system. These areas of the brain can be damaged in cerebral palsy. Medication and counseling may be helpful.

No: It is not healthy for people of any age to throw temper tantrums.  Tantrums are never the preferred method of dealing with stress.  Other methods of stress reduction should be taught and learned.  Temper tantrums can be a sign of more serious psychopathology.

Have a plan: There is nothing unique about adhd in terms of handling temper tantrums--excpet they may be a bit more prone to them.  To little space to go into detail, but look up the explosive child or others sources about dealing with out-of-control behavior.  Develop a consistent intervention that keeps the child safe and minimizes secondary gain (benefits) the child might be getting.  Adhd is not an excuse.

If you let him: Pre-teen is an age of testing.  Children that age are just becoming aware of how they relate to parents and to others.  They often test parents to see what they can get away with.  They are trying to learn the limits and the tolerances of others.  You need to help them learn appropriate behavior.

Not Everyday Thing!: U ; your daughter both must feel frustrated ; exhausted at these times. I would advise consulting with a developmental expert -a child psychologist or psychiatrist. I'd want to understand what is provoking her outbursts as well as what is fueling them after they start. Tantrums are associated w/ various challenges -communication delays, anxiety problems, earaches, etc. Expert can help u help her!
