what can i do to relieve my one year old's cough due to a build of phlegm. it has been there for over 4 days and the cough syrup does not help much. she is mostly affected at during sleep?

No cough syrup: At this age in general cough syrup is not effective. Nasal saline and gentle suction, cool air mist humidified air is advised. Keep your child well hydrated, monitor regularly for fever. Treat fever with infant Tylenol. If the cough is associated with wheezing, respiratory difficulty or vomiting, please see your pediatrician right away. A flu vaccination is advised.

Whopping cough?: That's called posttussive emesis. It is a significant sign.  The baby should be checked by the pediatrician.

i gave him fenamin suspension for fever and prospen for cough. but fever is taking a bit of time to go down.  
he gets chills now and again?

: You should call your pediatrician to see what you should do next. If the baby starts having difficulty breathing or the fever doesn’t come down, you should go to an ER ASAP. Children can get very sick very fast so don’t hesitate to go to the nearest ER. Increasing fluids will help with the fever. Is there any chance of Covid exposure? If so, get the baby tested. : Have the kid seen. I accept common colds that last up to 2 weeks. When a month has passed with continued problems I look for other treatable conditions including mild asthma.

Vapor and love: There isn't really any medicine that's authorized for that age. Usually best thing is getting the bathroom steamy and sitting in there for half an hour or so. Helps the mucous drain. You can use Vicks (chest only, not on the feet), and nasal saline and suction to remove mucous from the nose. Other cold medicines are, unfortunately, off limits.

Many conditions: There are many causes of cough, but one that lasts 3 weeks is considered prolonged. Usually cough caused by uncomplicated viral illnesses lasts 7-10 days. I would suggest an evaluation for wheezing, inflammation in the lung, a secondary infection, an ear/sinus/throat infection and other causes .  
Your physician may order testing such as a chest radiograph to determine the cause and to advise rx

Comfort care: As long as the kid can keep up with it's activities of daily living to feed/drink/sleep/play they need little more than comfort care. Cough/cold medicines used by older kids/adults have little to offer &amp; may prolong the symptoms by thickening secretions.

? twitchy airways: another fancy name for asthma-like symptoms, can be related to reflux, sinusitis, or viral infections, or other causes. You may want to perform some reflux precautions: raising the head of the bed 30 degrees, thicken her formula with cereal if she is still on it. More important is to see her doctor, as she might need some inhaled bronchodilators to help her at night and probably other Rx meds too,

Patience: A cough is a natural protective mechanism designed to bring up mucus/debris from deep in the lung so it can be removed. None of the over the counter meds or supplements have been found effective or needed in these kids.At most they just give you something to do so you feel better (not the kid). I find a 1/2 tsp of honey with lemon juice or chocolate are as good as anything to provide some benefit
