Feeding: At one mouth 3-4 ounces every 3-4 hours is right. There is some variation, of course.

my 3 1/2 month old is eating formula 4-5x daily with 5 ounces during each feeding. is he getting enough formula? he weighs about 12 lbs.

Accepted Answer

Probably fine: Most 12 lb babies could fit as much as 6 oz/feed, but if he is wetting diapers every 4-6 hours and thriving this is fine.

my 4 1/2 month old is not eating well and is now waking several times a night. she has slept through the night since 6 weeks old. what could cause thi?

Poor sleeper: At 41/2 months your child may be beginning to teeth. Since her problem started earlier one might consider the possibility of a food or milk intolerance.. Check with your doctor or an allergist.

my 1 year old (17 months) was eating a chicken wing, and i went to check on the progress of her eating and she ate the whole bone in the wing part!

Not to worry: Take a piece of the chicken bone and leave it in vinegar over night. When you see how soft the bone is in the morning, you will realize why there is no cause for alarm.  The acidity of the stomach is MUCH more than that of vinegar.  If the baby is behaving normally, there is no problem.

Don't : Don't wake him up!  thank your lucky stars that he's a good sleeper and let him sleep through the night!  unless he has a genetic disorder that requires him to eat every few hours (and you would know this because it is part of the newborn screen), it is fine to let him sleep throughout the night - even 8 hours if he'll do it.  He may want to eat more during the day if he's sleeping more at night, so if he's draining that 4 oz bottle, you may want to offer 5 or 6 oz.  He'll let you know when he's hungry.  Congratulations on your baby!

Check: Have his eyes checked. His ability to respond to light may be a problem. Some people have different sized pupils but have him checked. All the best.

Small frequent meals: It's hard not making mealtime a battle, but remember his stomach is only the size of his fist.  Offer small healthy meals three times a day with 2 healthy snacks and don't expect him to sit longer than 10-15 minutes at a time.

Pediatrics: A child that young especially should not have growing lymph nodes except perhaps around the ears. Please have him examined right away.

Mild illness if any: CMV is a virus which targets the immature nerves in the fetal brain as well as other organs. While it can be devastating if acquired as a fetus, infection in a term newborn or later rarely produces recognized illness or problems. Infants born prematurely that get it immediately have risk proportional to the degree of prematurity.

is it safe to use benzethonium chloride (such as wet ones wipe) on 1-month old infant boy's face? he got acne and dr suggested antibacterial soap, but it was hard to apply. i am thinking of using just water and then wipe with wet one without rinse.

Maybe, but why...: Why look at it that way? Maybe it has nothing to do with bacteria. Babies have no bacteria before birth. In vaginal deliveries, babies are coated with Mom's vaginal and poop bacteria (is nature's design). Note that C-section babies miss this oppornity. Babies must get natural bacterial to have normal health. After birth, a baby's hormonal balance changes, which is in part responsible for rashes.
