A 49-year-old member asked:
what does it mean when you're done eating and then have to poop right away?

Postprandial urgency: The need to have a bowel movement immediately after eating is often due to spasm of the colon. It is not necessarily a normal urge. Sometimes it is a sign of irritable bowel syndrome. Before seeing a doctor, it is often useful to increase fiber and fluid intake, and perhaps even try a fiber supplement, such as Metamucil. If this doesn't work after 3 to 4 weeks, see your doctor. Good luck.

What color poop is normal?

Most colors: Stool color changes with age and diet. Newborns have sticky black stools (called meconium) until about 4 days of life when the stool transitions to a yellow color. When you start introducing solids, stool color may change depending on what the baby ate. Black (older than newborn) and clay/white colors may indicate a problem. If you think there is blood in the stool you need to see a pediatrician.

How much poop is normal?

Variable: Poop or stool is quite variable from one child to the next regardless of whether they're breast fed, bottle fed, or which formula they're on. Some babies poop with every feed, while some don't poop but for several days. As long as the stool is soft, normal, and they child is acting well and growing normally, it is probably ok. Always best to check with your pediatrician if you're not sure.

A 31-year-old member asked:
Is it normal to have yellow poop?

Dr. James Fergusonanswered

Yes: The main agent adding color to the poo is the material made by the liver called bile. It starts out a dark green and goes thru the yellows to brown depending on the influences of various factors in the intestines. Rapid transit thru the system, as may occur with diarrhea or breast feeding may have a greenish yellow or yellow appearance. The slower, more likely browner.

Can you get sick from someone's poop fumes?

Smells strong but: Poop fumes can make us feel sick to our stomach but it can't make us actually sick. We get sick from the germs in poop, not by the smell of poop. Good question!

I always feel like I have to go to the restroom to poop, but when I do, nothing comes out. What can I do?

Check up: This is called tenesmus, the false urge to have a bowel movement. The rectum responds to pressure and sends a signal that you need to defecate. Anything that causes pressure in the rectum will cause this signal. These include stool, enlarged hemorrhoids, polyps or tumors, inflammation of the rectal lining (proctitis). The safest thing to do is discuss this with your doctor.
