Cream or oral?: Vectavir (penciclovir) is a cream for herpes. Zovirax (acyclovir) is available both as a cream and pills to be taken by mouth. Neither cream works very well; if herpes treatment is needed, pills are always best. In other words, Vectavir and Zovirax creams are both poor treatments, but Zovirax pills usually are very effective.
