Best: naked!: The best treatment is less time in a diaper-- and more time naked! dry your baby's bottom with a cold hair dryer or fan, and let him or her enjoy a bare bottom for a while. You can also use one of many diaper rash creams. Rarely, a visit to the doctor for a prescription is needed.

What is the treatment for rashes in the neck area?

Vaseline: Babies have "bull necks", and wetness and formula love to get into the creases and cause irritation. Yeast may even move in, making more fun for everyone. A good antifungal like lotrimin (clotrimazole) kills the yeast, an anti inflammatory such as Hydrocortisone helps the raw irritated skin, and a barrier cream such as vaseline protects the skin from future irritation and allows it to heal.

Do scales in the diaper area indicate diaper rash, or another condition?

Could be infection: Often time scales in this area could mean a fungal infection. There are prescription creams available from your pediatrician to treat this. You can try a barrier cream first- like aquaphor or desitin (zinc oxide diaper cream) and see if your baby's skin improves.
A member asked:

What can I do about drool rash?

Dr. Laura Webb
Pediatrics 13 years experience
Aquaphor or Vasoline: Drool rash is very common in children. It may worsen during teething (when your baby tends to drool more) or during feeding. Typically using a barrier lotion/cream such as aquaphor or vasoline will protect the skin from the drool and the irritation will decrease. If your baby's rash begins to look more yellow and crusty see a pediatrician as your baby may have developed a secondary infection.
