1 month: All hormonal contraceptives take at least a month to reach a stead level in your system, so for the first month get another form of contraception along with nexplanon.

Remember: That all birth controls have failures. It is not 100 percent. So you are still at risk of getting pregnant with the nexplanon. Also, one in five people have an std, so to protect from that and a possible Nexplanon failure, i would recommend condoms as well. Otherwise if you must have unprotected sex, i would wait til your next cycle after placement of the device.
