Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD: Mirena (levonorgestrel) is a t-shaped device that is placed in the uterus and serves as a contraceptive. It works by releasing progesterone, which renders the inside of the uterus unfavorable for implantation, decreases tubal motility, and thickens cervical mucus which blocks sperm penetration. It can be left in for a maximum of 5 years. It also has the additional benefit of decreasing menstrual bleeding.
