Depends: It depends on the type of tubal ligation. If you had your tubes cut and tied at the time of a cesarean delivery, it fails about 1 time in 400. If you had a clip placed on the tube it is usually around 1:300. The newer tubal ligations where we put a coil or plug in the tubes are better and fail really rarely.

To prevent pregnancy: If you cannot utilize other methods of birth control and feel you have completed your family. Tubal ligation does not prevent venereal disease. If you are in a monogamous relationship have your partner consider a vasectomy instead. If future children are something you are considering both can be reversed - but with different degrees of success.

Ask about Essure hysteroscopic permanent sterilization also since this can be done in the office with minimal down time. Better success rates too.

More info: Are you trying to get pregnant? You can consult a fertility doctor about a tubal reversal. You can also have IVF to get pregnant. If you have your tubes tied and have a positive pregnancy test, call your doctor right away so they can confirm it is not an ectopic, or tubal pregnancy which can be life threatening.
