Yes: Yes, it is still possible to transmit the virus even when a person does not have an active outbreak. However it is, of course, much less likely and often occurs prior to an outbreak. Some will describe a tingling or burning sensation in the area where they usually have a lesion develop. If this occurs - abstain!
