Depends: Condoms provide a physical shield between your skin and your partners. Transmitting an infection through a condom is next to impossible. But remember - it is possible to catch an infection with other skin to skin contact (oral, hand, etc.). Bottom line is to be careful.

Sometimes: Condoms when used properly certainly can cut down the risk of catching std. But sexual activity can be vigorous, and the chance of a std somehow spreading is still there even though lessened. Fortunately most std's can be treated. See your family doctor if you have suspicions. And get your partner into treatment if they have a problem.
