Usually: Although it is recommended to get the Depo-Provera shot within a few days of staring a period (at least for the initial one) or within 12 weeks of a previous injection, it should be fine as long as your doctor has totally ruled out the possibility of pregnancy.

Could change : Your period timing could change as the effects of Progesterone can cause a disruption in your normal cycle. For some women their periods get really light and sometimes even go away completely on the depot Provera (medroxyprogesterone) shot. Some women have more breakthrough bleeding (bleeding when it's not time for your period). But overall, you'll be fine if you get it before your period.

Very common: Although most women will not have periods at all on Depo-Provera some will have irregular bleeding. It is not harmful but can be frustrating. If it continues you may consider an alternative method of birth control.
