The "depo shot" is long acting progestin (synthetic progesterone), and may inhibit ovulation over long intervals, causing higher estrogen levels to thicken the endometrium. Once discontinued, the shedding excess endometrium will result in extended bleeding, and ovulation will again resume once off the effects of the "depo shot".
