On average, the menopausal transition beings at age 47, but this is variable. Irregular cycles is one sign, as are hot flashes, mood changes, sleep disturbances. Hormone blood tests are not necessary to determine this transition. Additionally, we recommend age specific cancer screening (pap smears, well woman exams, and mammograms and colonoscopy) in your age group.

Menstrual irregularities are not uncommon and anovulatory cycle is a common cause. If you miss more than two periods it would be time to see your doctor. If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time. You may consider implanted contraceptive or an IUD.
