Is it a good idea to have first time sex with birth control pills instead of condoms?

No...it's NOT a good idea! BCPs are only for prevention of pregnancy and give absolutely NO protection against STDs. Only a properly used condom can provide any such protection and even that is not 100 percent! Nothing wrong with waiting...
