A member asked:

Does bacterial vaginosis typically cause inflammation/vaginal pain? would pain/discomfort on the first day of using metronidazole gel a cause for concern? insertion of applicator causes discomfort especially at opening of vagina?

Maybe more than BV: Bacterial vaginosis is painless; there is no inflammation at all, not even itching, irritation, etc. Howver, trichomonas causes similar discharge and odor as BV, and trich sometimes causes pain and irritation. Also, BV often is triggered by other infections that could cause these symptoms, like herpes, gonorrhea or chlamydia. Get back to your doctor ASAP. Good luck.
