Newborn RDS?: Neonatal RDS (newborn RDS) occurs in newborns whose lungs have not yet fully developed and so don't have enough lubricating substance in the lungs called surfactant. Surfactant helps the lungs inflate and keeps open the smallest air sacs in the lungs. If a newborn has very mild transient RDS, there should be no problem. The baby soon makes enough surfactant and then breathes normally.

RDS ??????????????: If your baby has symptoms now at 6 wks, but did not at birth, it is another process, not RDS. At 6 wks the more common entity would be chlamydia pneumonia or late onset group B strep disease. Either are potentially deadly processes so I hope you have taken baby in for an evaluation and treatment.
