Are the sperm used for conventional ivf and icsi scanned for chromosome abnormalities first?

No: No. They only do preimplantation genetic testing on the fertilized embryo. The problem is the process of testing a single sperm to look for abnormalities destroys that sperm. So once you know that the sperm was normal, you can no longer use it.
