HSV-1/HSV-2: Herpes simplex viruses , which are commonly known as herpes, are categorized into herpes type 1 and herpes type 2. Generally herpes type 1 causes sores in the area of the mouth and lips. Although HSV-1 can cause genital herpes the majority of cases of genital herpes are caused by herpes type 2.

Different viruses: That means having immunity to one type does not protect you from another type. There are eight currently identified types of the human herpes virus family: herpes 1 (HHV1), herpes 2 (HHV2), varicella zoster (HHV3, chicken pox, shingles), Ebstein Barr (HHV4, EBV), cytomegalovirus (HHV5, CMV), roseola (HHV6, sixth disease), human herpes virus 7 (HHV7), and Kaposi's sarcoma herpes virus (HHV8).
