It's covered by skin: The belly button is a well-healed old scar, and thus is covered with skin. The same things that can go through the skin on your flank or on your buttocks can also go through your belly button. A guy's belly button is the same as a girl's belly button. In the grand scheme of life, "nothing" gets through the belly button.
