Folliculitis?: A common cause of painful lumps around the genitals is folliculitis, or bacterial infection of the hair follicle. Appearance is similar to large painful pimple over hair shaft. Self-resolution is usual (can apply warm compress and topical antibacterial ointment), but if recurrent or painful, a physician can rule out other potential causes and/or need for antibiotics.
