Cure for herpes?

26 doctors weighed in across 14 answers

Not yet: Herpes is one of the most common & frequent infections. Once infected, the virus travels to sensory nerves and remains there lifelong. There is no treatment to eliminate the virus permanently. Reactivation or 'outbreaks' of herpes can be managed effectively with anti-virals. Frequent outbreaks can be prevented with daily anti-virals taken for a year or longer with close supervision from a doctor.

No cure; Yes help: There is no cure for oral or genital herpes, but antiviral medications are helpful in preventing or clearing up herpes sores. Topical antiviral creams are somewhat helpful but not as helpful as oral medications. To treat an outbreak, one should start the medication as soon as possible to get the best effect. A primary care doctor can discuss the various treatments and prescribe medication.

No: Once you get the herpes virus, you will always have it. There are periods of having symptoms when the virus is active & periods of no symptoms when the virus is not active. There are meds to help with the symptoms but will not cure it. Herpes can be spread even if you are not experiencing symptoms (ex rash). Always use condoms to prevent the spread of herpes to others.

Herpes: Once the individual has an active infection, there is medication cure, only control. Medication keeps many outbreaks under control, and reduces the symptoms when the infection surfaces. Infected individuals can spread herpes, and spread less off on medication.

Curing Herpes: The simple answer is no. But, there is a way to treat any outbreak and a way to suppress outbreaks. Herpes is the name for two different but similar viral infections. The herpes type on generally is found in the oral or mouth region and herpes type two is thought to be more likely transmitted sexually and is found somewhere between the belly button and thighs. Treated is possible not cured.

Herpes is forever: Once you have herpes you will always have it in your body. There is no cure. Acute flair ups can be treated with an antiviral and an antiviral can be prescribed daily to prevent outbreaks.

Herpes simplex: Once infected with this virus it remains in your body for the remainder of your life. It cannot be "cured" in the sense that it is eradicated, but the frequency and severity of recurrences and the duration of illness may be shortened by the use of Acyclovir and its salts.

Controlling = curing: antiviral medications, e.g. acyclovir, help to control herpes outbreaks, it can also shorten the duration and limit recurrence, taking good care of yourself helps a lot too, eat a balanced diet, exercise, and get enough sleep, get treated early to prevent complications
