Hormones: Any hormones you take as pills can cause changes like acne. Try a different pill, every woman is different and you should be able to find one that doesn't cause acne.

Atypical : That is not very typical so there is not going to be a good scientific explanation. Most get better. Perhaps your acne is worse for other reasons.
