Contact spread: Herpes is a virus that is spread by contact with infected secretions or body surfaces. There are two types - types 1 and 2. Type one is usually oral and type 2 genital, but both can infect and spread from anywhere on the body. Therefore, while genital herpes is mostly an std, both types can spread other ways, such as birth, diaper changes with infected hands, kissing, etc...

Contact: Contact is how you get herpes, i know of no other way. Whether it's kissing or rubbing, skin to skin contact is how the disease is transmitted. There is something called herpes gladiotorum that has ruined wrestling seasons because all of the wrestlers get it on their body typically starting from 1 person's mouth.
