Self induced pain: Self-induced pain to relieve mental or somatic pain is common. Apprarently one type of pain can block out another pain. Another reason is related to dissociation, derealization. Self induced pain helps some people get reconnected to reality and their own body. Rape is a traumatic event that can lead to mental anguish, depression, dissociation, etc. The post-traumatic stress syndrome is treatable.

See if you can get this person to submit to a full psychiatric evaluation, with medication for anxiety and depression as an option. Also see if you can find a reputable psychotherapist who can deal with those who've been raped and or sexually abused. Do this today.
