A 34-year-old member asked:
can i still have sex if i have hepatitis?

It depends: If you have hepatits b, barrier protection with a condom is recommended as is vaccination of sexual partners. Hepatitis a can be transmitted by causal contact and sex should be avoided until recovery. Hepatitis c is more complicated. It is not considered sexually transmitted but may be in some cases (0.1%). Condoms should be considered.

Yes: First of all it depends on the type of hepatitis. Acuter hepatitis increase transmission risk so sex should be avoided. It really involves an upfront conversation with your partner. Risk of transmission through sex is not high but does exist. Condoms would be appropriate.

A 31-year-old member asked:
Is it possible to have sex with some one with hepatitis and not catch it?

Yes, but why chance?: Repeated exposure increases your risk (its like rolling the dice again & again). Different kinds of hepatitis virus are more or less effectively transmitted sexually. Having the male partner wear a condom is some protection, but really...Why take the chance until your partner is treated & the virus eradicated? If you have been exposed, get blood test to see if you got it, can transmit it to others.

A 30-year-old female asked:
Can you have sex with a hepatitis patient if you have vaccinated?

Dr. Robert Killian answered

Hepatitis: First you must know that there are several different types of hepatitis. Only two of them can be vaccinated for. So, your question is missing the most important part of your question. Hepatitis a and b can be vaccinated for. The other common deadly hepatitis in america, hepatitis c, cannot be vaccinated for but is rarely--if ever--transmitted sexually. Hepatitis d, e, f, g and h are not common.

Yes but: You (or your partner) should use a condom if there is active hepatitis b or c. Hepatitis a is not transmitted sexually.
