Herpes = cold sores: The virus that causes cold sores is called herpes simplex. There are two types of herpes simplex (type i and type ii). In the past, herpes type i usually caused the cold sores, and type ii caused the genital sores. Now both types are found in both places.

None: Cold sores are caused by herpes virus, usually type1. Most people think of herpes as genital herpes, which are usually caused by HSV 2, herpes type 2. There is no cure for this virus, but there is medication to repress the virus and limit chance of symptoms or passing it to someone else.
