You should not...: At least that is the idea behind taking the contraceptive pill. It gives you a constant dose of sex hormones that suppresses your own production of estrogen and progesterone, thereby preventing follicle maturation and release of an ovum. If for some reason you did ovulate while on the pill, your cervical mucus is also altered which prevents sperm from gaining entry to the upper reproductive tract

Possible: One mechanism of action is to prevent ovulation but the hormones also make the cervical mucous less hospitable for sperm blocking them from getting to an egg. It is always a good idea to use condoms in addition to ocp. Especially if you just started ocp and don't know if they are strong enough for you (such as no break thru bleeding)
