Immediately: If you are getting it while on your period, it is immediately effective. However, I am of the mind to always be on the safe side and use a condom for one week after injection.

Delay is not rare: It is not rare to have a delay in the return of your periods after taking the repo birth control shot. If you do not want to be pregnant, you should still use birth control, as the return of your periods and fertility can come at any time. If you are trying to get pregnant, talk with your doctor. There is no permanent effect on fertility, but there can be a delay while your ovaries "wake up".

A 29-year-old female asked:

How long does it take the Depo-Provera birth control shot to where off?

Dr. Laura Pearlman

Variable: Depoprovera is given every 12 weeks for birth control after stopping the shot, some women resume their cycles 4-6 week later. But in some patients there is a delay in resumption of cycles that can last over a year. That is quite rare. You still need to use birth control as soon as the Depo-Provera shot is missed, since you can never know when you will ovulate.
