Closer, yes: IUI--intrauterine insemination--is a procedure that deposits sperm in a woman's uterus. During regular intercourse, sperm are ejaculated into the vagina and must move up through the vagina and cervix to reach the uterus. Fertilization usually occurs in the ampulla of Vater, which is even further "upstream." The advantage of IUI is it bypasses the vagina and cervix (distance, pH, mucous, etc.).
