Pregnancy: Shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to your uterine lining, the hormone HCG) begins production in the placenta and enters your bloodstream and urine. During early pregnancy, the HCG in your blood increases rapidly — often doubling every two to three days. Many home pregnancy tests can reliably detect this hormone in your urine one week after a missed period.

See below: Conception, as defined by the generation of a fertilized ovum, occurs within day or so of the sex. However, it takes about two weeks for the embryo to make enough HCG to produce a positive pregnancy test. Blood test may be done a day after a missed period. Home pregnancy tests should be done 4-5 days after the missed period.

Too early to tell: Early during pregnancy the hormone has not reached a detectable level for home pregnancy kits. Though you are 2 days late, don't worry. Sometimes the period can be late by few days. Avoid alcohol and smoking. Use prenatal vitamin. In the event you are pregnant, you want to provide a healthy environment for the fetus to grow.
