Why are there so many different types of birth control pills?

3 billion women: Some help with bloating, some dont. Some are 21, 28, 84 days long at a time. Some are generics with cute names for the brand. Side effects of the two drugs in bc pills require fine tuning as well. Also some have more or less effect on spotting, psychiatric treatment, acne, cancer prevention etc.

Each one different: Every woman requires just a little bit more or a little bit less estrogen in order to control the amount of bleeding they have while they're on the pill. Furthermore the type of progestin used in the pill affects each woman's likelihood of side effects ever so slightly and so most women change the type of pill they're on several times before finding the right one.
