Anal muscles. : Yes. The anal sphincter is muscular in nature and very innervated (consider how these nerves allow people to distinguish between gas, solid stool and liquid stool). This muscular complex like others can be strained with consequential pain. Other common sources of pain with or following defection are hemorrhoids or an anal fissure, which is a small tear of the tissue making up the anal lining.
