Wait awhile...: Ulipristal Acetate (Ella) works up to 5 days after unprotected intercourse. You may experience some spotting or a delayed period. This is normal. For peace of mind, do a pregnancy test sometime after your period is due. If you plan to continue to have intercourse, get on regular contraception such as a birth-control pill, its more effective. Best wishes!

An effective choice: Ella is 95% effective at preventing pregnancy when taken within 120 hours (5 days) of intercourse. Ella works by preventing ovulation, even during the time in your cycle when you’re most fertile. That’s important because sperm can live for five days in a woman’s reproductive tract. Most other emergency contraceptives are only approved for three days. It should only be used in an emergency.
